Natural attractions of Odry region [ Natural point of interest ]

'Natural attractions of Odry region
Odry region spreads out in cadastral territory of the town Odry and villages Luboměř, Spálov, Heřmánky, Heřmanice u Oder, Jakubčovice nad Odrou, Vražné u Oder, Mankovice, Jeseník nad Odrou and Suchdol nad Odrou. From geomorphological point of view it belongs to complex of Lower Jesník made up by undercomplex Vítkov's highlands and wards Potštát's highlands, Heřmanice's highlands, Tošovice's highlands and Odry's fold (northwestern part of Odry region) and to complex Moravian gate made up by undercomplex Odry's gate and wards Bělotín's upland, Klimkovice's upland, Bartošovice's upland and Odry's wold.
Geological structure of Odry region is determined by belonging to two geomorphologically different complexs. While the Lower Jeseník is made up above all by greywackes, agglomerates and clay slates with sporadic occurrence of non-ferrous ores - galena, the Moravian gate is made up by sediments - loesses and gravelous sands.
From geomorphological and geological attractions of Odry region it is needed to remind of Natural monument "Fold system" at Klokočůvek, "Častochov's stony sea" at Spálov, stone quarry of firm Josef Hájek in Jakubčovice n. O. for mining and working with greywackes for building purposes, "Golden mine" at Pohoř (desolated mining shop of galena mining), desolated drifts after mining of slates at Veselský hill or in the surroundings of Spálov - "Hell (Peklo)", "Bishop's rock" or "Peter's rock" (with each year creating ice decoration) and desolated small quarries after mining of wall stone (mainly greywacke) as for example "Hanel's rock" in Heřmánky, "Little rock" at Jakubčovice n. O., small forest quarries at Odry, Pohoř, Kolonky (Nová Ves), Veselí, Dobešov, Kamenka, Heřmanice, Spálov and Luboměř. Noteworthy are also various rock blows - e.g. at hill-side of the hill Chrastavec over Jakubčovice (with inscribed German inscriptions), in the surroundings of Klokočůvek - "Orlík" on Čížavice, little rocks in the valley of the river Odra or in "Pecov", blows of agglomerates in valley of the stream Čermné under Vítkov. Unique rock bill "Swedish rock" lies over railway station Heřmánky. Here is built a wooden view with beautiful view of valley of the river Odra and stream Čermné. Interesting is that rocky undercut-slope banks in loops of the river Odra in the surroundings of Klokočůvek, whereas under Klokočůvek you can see in bed of the river Odra a unique rock sill.
Interesting are small water areas originated after surface winning of wall stone - for example "Sea eye " at Heřmanice or after clay winning for production of bricks - in Dobešov, in Luboměř "On the tracks", in Spálov at "Královec", in Heřmanice or in Véska.
Odry region is interesting also from hydrological point of view. Central element is without question the river Odra which is base of the whole Odry region and thanks to its rampancy (at the upper spring there is for the present built no greater water reservoir) is an unique landscape-building element of the Protected Landscape Area Poodří in the Moravian gate. The river Odra is till now relatively only little touched river with character of torrential flow to the town Odry and lowland river in the Moravian gate and lower. Its natural bed suffers more and more from various regulations in the interest of stabilization of its flow - e.g. reparations after floods in 1997. From landscape and natural point of view it is certainly the most valuable its flow in the section from spring to Klokočůvek and lower from Jeseník n. O. in the Protected Landscape Area Poodří. From the more important tributaries of the river Odra in Odry region it is needed to mention right-hand tributaries - Něčínský stream, Havranův stream, stream Bralný, Suchá, Mlýnský stream, Stodolní stream, Vraženský stream (Vraženka), Hrabětický stream and Luha with Hradečný, Lučický, Blahutovický and with Vlčnovský stream (called Rybník) and left-hand tributaries - Čertův stream, Čermná (Čermenka or also Červenka) with tributaries Pecovský, Klokočovský and a number of nameless streams, Heřmanický stream, Vítovka, stream Vladař, Zlatý stream, Rasův stream, Medvědí stream and Kletenský stream.
Both the river Odra and its tributaries suffer from big wobblines of through flows. Nevertheless they are bigger and non-drying up tributaries of fishing important breed streams.
Water areas - Odry's ponds, water reservoir in Vítovka, in Kletná or in Emauzy. In Odry region there is a quite number of small ponds with failed dams which are important localities, e.g. for amphibians (frogs and efts) - at Veselí, at Dobešov, at Tošovice, "Trouts little ponds" at Dvořisko.
Odry region is rich in mushrooms. Especially among mushroom-pickers from Ostrava a railway station Klokočov with its surrounding forests is sought after. You can meet edible mushrooms in Odry region all the year round. In winter especially on European walnuts grow oyster mushrooms, at Odry's ponds on European elders grows Jew's ear - essential mushroom of oriental kitchen. In spring at broad-leaved edges of forests or in bank growths grows under sycamores a delicious wood blewit. In May you can under plum-trees pick up roman shield entoloma. From June to frosts then begins under wet weather the right mushroom season. From mushrooms the most abundant is bay boletus in pine-woods and red-cracked boletus which prefers mixed forests. From another mushrooms you can find penny-bun boletus (occuring in recent years in plenty), boletus aestivalis, porphyrellus pseudoscaber, boletinus cavipes and other. Under larchs you can find larch boletus and edges of forests and balks where aspens and birchs grow are standpoints of shaggy boletus and orange-cap boletus. Plentiful are various species of russulas and lactarids. After longer time it is again possible to find chantarelle (sometimes wrong named as flavescens). In later summer you can in Odry region commonly find two species of parasol mushrooms - parasol mushroom and shaggy parasol. Everywhere grows unjustly neglected edible blusher. From field agarics (champignons) there occur in pastures horse mushroom and in forests not very tasty forest mushroom. In meadows you can pick up fairy ring champignon or shaggy ink cap. Commonly it is possible to pick up various species of puff-balls, rarely padders and only as a spice common earth-ball. Autumn is in Odry region in token of wood-destroying funguses - honey funguses which do well mostly in pine monocultures, kuehneromyces mutabilises and velvet shanks which grow on dead wood of hardwood species. A frequent mushroom growing in hardwood forests is tylopilus felleus.
Uneatable mushrooms are in Odry region represented above all by bitter boletus and bitter species of lactarids.
Poisonous mushrooms are in Odry region represented above all by fly agarics from which the most poisonous is death angel. On the contrary fly poison amanita is not so dangerous and for its beauty it deserves our attention.
Higher sporing plants are in Odry region represented by bazzanias, mosses, lycopods, horsetails and fern-growths. Peatmosses you can meet in moorland Kamenka as well as in its surroundings or in nature preserve Královec at Spálov. At Dobešov grows and in former times also at "Peter's rock" at Spálov grew a protected stiff clubmoss. More abundant lycopodium can be seen especially along newly built forest roads - for example in valley of the stream Čermné or over pastures in Jakubčovice n. O. From more rare ferns you can in Odry region fins a protected leaved finned tube at moorland Kamenka and forked spleenwort on the "Swedish rock" and in Jakubčovice's stone quarry.
Odry region is interesting for occurrence of some especially protected and endangered species of higher plants. To the most rare localities belong flower meadows which are mowed manually and are not fertilized. You can see such plants in the surroundings of Dobešov and Spálov. Here occur orchids - twayblade and protected lesser butterfly orchid and dead man's finger, further lady's-slipper, round-headed rampion and former sedum acre. Near to Jakubčovice n. O. you can find another protected species of orchids - common spotted-orchid. Interesting is occurrence of orchidaceous broad helleborine in side ditch of the street II/441 and along the street from Vítovka to Heřmanice. To the present there are preserved valuable wetlands from which the most interesting - Královec at Spálov was in 2000 proclaimed to be a nature preserve. At Královci grows protected broad-leaved marsh orchid and endangered dwarf scorzonera, marsh valerian, dwaft red rattle, cotton grass, round-headed rampion and other more commen meadow and wetland species. Other valuable wetlands with occurrence of broad-leaved marsh orchid you find for example in Klokočůvek under cemetery, in Vítovka behind the dam, in Jakubčovice n. O. behing the former prison and in valley of tributary of Hradečný stream at Dobešov. From spring plants occurence of protected snowdrop bulb in valley of Něčínský stream, endangered dentaria bulbifera in valley of Hradečný stream at Veselí and dentaria enneaphyllos in hardwood forests in the surroundings of Dobešov (e.g. in the nature preserve Suchá Dora), endangered false rue anemone in valley of the river Odra over Spálov's mill and in bank territories of Něčínský stream and stream Suchá and almond spurge in hardwood forests with structure near to the original oak growths. In late spring it blooms in bank growths of the river Odra over Klokočůvek or under Odry with mauve flossoms of protected satinflower - the richest locality you can see in the surroundings of Skála of the Virgin Mary. In desolated quarry under Pohoř you can find protected golden queen which was planted out here. Interesting is occurrence of viscum laxum on once frequent white firs.
Odry's nature can trot out with quite a number of medicinal plants. In winter it is possible to pick up white mistletoe which coloned above all lindens and maples in the valley of the river Odra. In spring meadows in Jakubčovice n. O., at Dobešov, in Klokočůvek or in Kamenka come into flowers with frequent five-finger (primrose). On dumps in the stone quarry in Jakubčovice n. O. there blooms coltsfoot. In hardwood forests there comes into flowers in spring Henriette's pics and woodruff. Then in balks there come into flowers rosaceae and hawthorns with curative blossoms. With beginning of summer a number of medicinal plants enlarges in geometric progression - in meadows it is swine's snout, buckhorn, lady's mantle, cow-grass and Dutch clover. In bank territories and at edges of forests there grow in plenty white dead-nettle, stinking nettle, common comfrey. With smell soak the landscape flowering false acacias and lindens - lilia platyphollos and littleleaf linden. Fields that were not treated with herbicides are places of occurrence of German chamomile, wax dolls, blue-bottle and field poppy. In summer on forest glades there bloom common St. John's wort, poisonous dwale and rarely verbascum densiflorum. Frequent is also strawberry, rapsberry and blackberry. In sun-exposed meadows there come into flowers origanum together with yarrow. With forestation of slant and sun-exposed meadows and pastures irrevocably disappear sooner plentiful Kangasajuruoho Breckland thyme.
In Odry region you can meet interesting bushes. In spring pink flowering narcotic scented mezereon will attract you which grows in the surroundings of Dobešov, Heřmanice and in valley of the river Odra and Něčínský stream. At the street from Jakubčovice n. O. to Dobešov protected bladder-nut grows in a balk. At Tošovice and Heltínov you can rarely find original common junipers. At Jakubčovice n. O. rhododendron and mongolian cherry grow in bank growth of the river Odra. Interesting is occurrence of idle species of breastwoods. In valley of the river Odra and in the surroundings of Dobešov there is common ribes (gooseberry). On natural rocks at stone quarry in Jakubčovice n. O. grows rarely russles (red currant).
Except the below mentioned memorable trees you can meet in Odry region other time-honoured trees which deserve our attention. For example trees of former manor park in Odry (copper beech, oriental planes, oaks and lindens), lindens in cemetery in Odry, in Klokočůvek, in Tošovice, in Luboměř and in Véska. In Dobešov at the chapel and shop you can see the most stately Scotch elms which survived grafiose of elmtrees in recent years. In Luboměř and in Klokočůvek you find number of aged lindens. Spálov can trot out with horse chestnuts (chestnuts) near to the former manor (nowadays primary school). In Jakubčovice n. O. there is a valuable factory park in the area of PRECISA (with maidenhair tree) and full-grown spruces near to lead. A true attention deserve scattered crab species of fruit trees from which in Odry region the most plentiful is bird-cherry (e.g. in balks over Klokočůvek and at Jakubčovice n. O. or in forests in the surroundings of Dobešov). Scattered in balks you can come across crab pear.
Forests are in Odry region the most valuable landscape-building element. Forestry valleys of the river Odra and its tributaries, hill-side of Veselský and Pohořský hill and Hrabětice's forest provide not only wood but they certainly are the most pleasant places for rest and recreation of local population and visitors. Odry region was in former times grown with oak forests from which the most valuable fragment was preserved at Jakubčovice n. O. in the nature preserve "Suchá Dora". In the natural monument "At Čermenka" near to railway station Klokočov next to fragment of beechwood grows all-aged production forest with majority of spruce which suits to varied composition of birds. Forests in Odry region are sought-after as a source of forest growths - strawberries, rapsberries, blackberries, blueberries and mushrooms.
To the natural variety landscape of Odry region expressively contributes so-called scattered vegetation - balks, forest meadows or standards in agriculturely cultivated areas. Without question the most valuable are balks over Klokočůvek. You find valuable balks on pastures in Jakubčovice n. O. and Loučky, at Tošovice, Veselí, Dobešov and Kamenka. From botanical point of view forest meadows at Spálov and Luboměř are interesting.
From the spineless animals in Odry region it is needed to mention occurrence of red ants of genus Formica which build their well-known ant-hills. They occur in the surroundings of Heltínov, Spálov, Dobešov and Pohoř. Decoration of nature of Odry region are without question daily butterflys - as for example protected swallowtail butterfly, apaturas, fritillaries and vanessas. From beetles occurrence of rhinoceros beetle is interesting whose larvas grow in in sawdust heaps in timber-yard in heřmánky and mass hibernating of ladybirds which gather in rocks' slots of the upper part of Jakubčovice's stone quarry and in spring they numbering thousands fly into the whole surroundings. From well-known and protected shellfishes in the river Odra occurs till now plentiful crayfish.
In Odry region you can meet some protected molluscs. At the upper stream of former lead in Jakubčovice n. O. there lives unio crassus. In the lower reservoir in Vítovka and in Emauzy there lives swan mussel. In valley of the stream Čermenka an interesting slug occurs, in adult age blue coloured bielzia coerulans .
Among chordates there belongs protected brook lamprey which occurs in the former mill lead in Jakubčovice n. O.
Odry region provides haven to quite a number of vertebrates. From fishes it is brook minnow, bullhead and milk-crust that rarely occur in the river Odra and its trout tributaries. The river Odra is from the spring to the so-called first weir in Odry trout water where especially wild intersex roach and European graylingare fished. Lower on the stream it concerns so-called white water where it is possible to fish chevins, common carps, northern pikes, perchs. In Odry's ponds carp, sheat fish, white amur, pike, bigheadcarp, tench are to be fished.
You find best the amphibians in Odry region in time of spring reproduction when especially frogs - common frogs and toads unmistakably tend to all water areas. The herpetologically richest locality of Odry region is certainly system of Odry's ponds from which at the two most valuable at Vraženský pond and at pond Cíp proclamation of nature preserve is meant. From protected amphibians occur here eft, yellow-bellied toad, toadskin, tree frog, fire salamander, agile frog and green frog. At forest streams you can rarely catch a protected yellow-blac fire salamander. Less striking are efts - eft, Alpine newt and the Carpathian newt which are best observable in so-called water phase when they keep in stream pools and smaller tanks - as for example in Dobešov and in Luboměř.
From protected reptiles you can relatively often observe slow-worn, sand lizard and top minnow. In the surroundings of the river Odra and its tributaries and especially in Odry's ponds there is plentiful ringsnake. In recent years it is again possible to seen in the nature of Odry region viper - for example in felled areas in valley of the stream Čermné or in meadows in valley of the Něčínský stream.
Odry region is a home, wintering grounds or rest place on the run of number of protected and endangered birds.
Rare mammals of Odry region are represented above all by Chiropteras (bats and horseshoe bats) which in winter periods seek out wintering grounds in defunct drifts after slate mining - for example on Veselský hill at Odry, in Jakubčovice n. O. or in the surroundings of Spálov. From the most common species it is above all large mouse-eared bat and newly even rhinolophe euryale. From other protected species of mammalias there occure in Odry region red squirrel, gastropods and ariadnes. Fair game is in Odry region represented above all by roe deer (roebuck), fallow deer (addra gazelle), wild boars (wild boar) and maverick big game (Europen buck). States of small game regenerate represented by brown hare, common partridge and ring-necked pheasant.
The most valuable part of the landscape of Odry region are protected by system of large-area and small-area protective zones. Valley wold of the river Odry in Moravian gate is protected by the Protected Landscape Area Poodří. Pictoresque landscape character of the Lower Jeseník in Odry region before urban development and wild recreation building is protected by the natural park "Odry's hills (Oderské vrchy)".
In 2000 the Basic unit of the Czech association of conservationists established in Odry in support of Department of the Environment, town Odry and other sponsors a nature trail "Silver pavement (Stříbrný chodník)". Guide-book of the nature trail is at disposal in the municipal information centre.
